Microsoft’s Photosynth team: Close to takeoff?

Microsoft has been working on the SeaDragon software which will quite possibly change how we take, view, and share images. I’ve been following each release of tech previews as they become available. More importantly, I’ve been anticipating the team releasing the software so that I can play with it in my house, to take pictures everywhere and then pull them all together into what Photosynth does best, make a 3D collage of photos.

Microsoft took NASAs Endeavor launch team to the task recently shooting over 100 photos of the launch pad while loaded with the Endeavor shuttle. The technology is very impressive, you can create a photostory and by simply linking to different photos using JavaScript pull the reader along with you visually.

As we move into the future, it’s the ability to pull the user into the content which will matter the most, and the ability to let them tell their own story. Content is king these days and as a service provider like Google or Microsoft, you need to be able to give user’s the tools to read and tell the stories.

Update: I’ve given this a bit more thought. I wonder if Microsoft is planning mashing this technology with it’s Virtual Earth 3D software. Much like Google Earth, Virtual earth is a 3D engine that is stitched together with the fabric of a map. Microsoft pulled 3D bitmaps from it’s Flight Simulator and mashed those into Virtual Earth. More importantly, as we move forward, will Microsoft let its users create 3D Photosynth Mashups of it’s software? This would definitely make Google earth with it’s remarkable KML markup language and ability to mash photos a lot less intriguing. If Microsoft could pull off a Photosynth+Virtual Earth, I’d be the first to jump ship.

Imagine a 3D View of a stadium, and then  you can click on a (PhotoSynth Tab) and then from the aerial photo, you are slowly zoomed in and then you zoom all the way down to a person eating a hotdog, or in the case of here in Ohio, perhaps a fan throwing a battery. 🙂
